2004/2005 Drawing Competition Winners
AceCad would like to thank all of the entrants for the StruCad Drawing
Competition 2004/2005 for such a high quality of entries. The judging process
was very difficult but we finally have our winners!
1st Place
Company: Genrec Engineering (Pty) Ltd
Project: Khalifa Sports Hall
The Khalifa Sports Hall is located in Doha, Qatar and consists of 8,500 tonnes
of steel, all of which was detailed on StruCad. The project presented Genrec
with the following challenges:
- Extremely complex composite connections had to be intimately addressed and
executed to incorporate specialised design,
fabrication, transportation and erection requirements.
- Conventional and vereendeel designs blended to achieve the project profile as
a whole and the spectacular Royal
Entrance area in particular.
- Design, detailing, procurement of material, fabrication, transport,
international clearance, and subsequent erection all
became an extremely exciting and rewarding challenge to finally meet the
tight program deadlines.
2nd Place
Company: Cadtec Draughting Ltd
Project: Telstra Stadium
This multi-use events centre themed around pacific island influences will
showcase local and international culture, arts and sport.
A significant construction milestone saw the assembly of the central spine truss
which forms the ridge of the multi-curved roof at ground level and then lifted
into its final position. Grayson engineering manufactured the eight massive
bottom chord sections in their workshop and transported them to site at night.
These were then laced together with cross and brace members along with the top
chord and finally clad in laminated timber to complete the truss structure ready
for the lift. The complex geometry of the truss was especially challenging for
both the detailing and fabrication but all components fitted perfectly, even at
the eight intersecting pipe section node point. Three cranes lifted the
165-tonne truss the 15M required for its traverse to its final position. The
truss was supported by an American 9310 200t crawler crane and a braced steel
support frame assembled on the back of a heavy duty transporter for its 56M move
and final lowering into position.
Strucad assisted hugely with the fabrication of the pipe truss assemblies. We
were able to supply pin point 3-d locations of chs quarter marks. These were
then used to position the pipe members in the shop using laser sights in real
space.
We were also able to supply information for the pipe member intersects and
rotations to allow for the correct clocking and position of the members. One
node point contained 8 intersecting pipe stubs which were all located using its
end quarter marks in relation to a datum line from a truss horizontal.
We also provided site with check dims throughout the erection process of the
main truss, both on the ground during assembly, to its final position after the
big lift.
